Crying Out For the Mercy of God

As a nation we are in a scary place. Our economy is in shambles. Our morals are in shambles. Our security is in shambles. We twist and turn chasing every glint of hope looking for an answer.

We have leaders telling us what they think we want to hear instead of telling us what we need to hear. They tickle our ears with sweet sounding platitudes. They woo us with hollow reassurances. They lull us asleep with promises there is no way they can keep.

On the other hand our enemies are very determined, very disciplined and very focused. They march on day by day chipping away at the freedoms we hold dear and true. They mock our ways. They mock our goodness. They mock our God.

So far this post is very depressing. But its not. It’s depressing if we are looking for answers only in the political realm. But the political realm holds very few true answers. The true answer for what ails us is in the mercy of God.

It is God who instituted this nation. It is the principles of God that were our founding principles. It is God alone who can save this nation. A democracy cannot long remain without a moral people. For freedom is but license unless people have a modicum of restraint. It is time for us to fall on our face before God Almighty and ask Him to restrain the hand of judgment and to instead pour out mercy in abuncdance. Just as President Lincoln declared many years ago:

“And whereas it is the duty of nations as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.

And, insomuch as we know that, by His divine law, nations like individuals are subjected to punishments and chastisements in this world, may we not justly fear that the awful calamity of civil war, which now desolates the land, may be but a punishment, inflicted upon us, for our presumptuous sins, to the needful end of our national reformation as a whole People? We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven. We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us!

It behooves us then, to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.”

Lord have mercy on this great nation and the souls of its citizens!

  1. Every single time there is a national debate about something in this country the religious are brought into the fold to decide the fate of different things. Stem cell research was pushed back because the church deemed it offensive to their doctrine. We battle over what a women can do to her own body, with a whole sect of people who believe their lord was the bastard son of the Almighty who knocked up a engaged woman.

Education policy is decided by law makers who believe a snake spoke to people in a garden a thousand years ago, never mind the scientific evidence to the contrary. Our foreign policy for eight years came from the mind of a former drug addict and self confessed alcoholic whose sins were magically washed way when he became “born again.” Policy that has us hated by once former allies, and created more strife with our enemies.

I can’t take it anymore America, I have to say this out loud. Have we all lost our minds? During the election there was a choice between to competent people. One was a war hero with years of senate experience, the other was president of the Harvard Law Review. What did we ask? What religious system did they believe in and how it’s going to help them govern.

Let it be known now, I don’t care what religion someone is, as long as they can get things done. I want the most competent minds in government thinking about how they can improve our lives through legislation, not through bible study. I want world leaders who care about the food that goes into people’s stomach, not the religious symbols they pray to.
To those who believe this nation is a Christian one, take this into consideration:

“Religious bondage shackles and debilitates the mind and unfits it for every noble enterprise.” – James Madison letter to Wm. Bradford, April 1, 1774

“The divinity of Jesus is made a convenient cover for absurdity. Nowhere in the Gospels do we find a precept for Creeds, Confessions, Oaths, Doctrines, and whole cartloads of other foolish trumpery that we find in Christianity.” – John Adams

“In the affairs of the world, men are saved, not by faith, but by the lack of it.”- Ben Franklin

“What is it the New Testament teaches us? To believe that the Almighty committed debauchery with a woman engaged to be married; and the belief of this debauchery is called faith.” – Thomas Paine

If we are going to progress as Americans we need to stop thinking in religious terms. It no longer matters what God you believe in, what matters is job creation. I’m reasonably sure Jesus Christ would agree with me if he indeed exists.

Who the hell are you to throw judgement anyone else way and tell me to confess my “sin” against God. The greatest sin against mankind is religion and persecution by you people. You persecute others for not believing the Almighty himself knocked up some engaged woman and fathered a child? Yet I’m the crazy one for thinking maybe science has something more to say than that old book misread.

    • The religious voice has a lot to speak to America …especially in times of national crisis.

The God of the Bible is the foundation upon which our nation stands. It is He alone who can save us. Thinking otherwise is the pride and arrogance that got us into the national crises we are in. It is easy to pull individual quotes out of anything to prove a point. Isn’t that what you accuse Christians of doing. But to say that the general belief of the founders was that they were building a nation where God would have no part is ludicrious. They could never have conceived of the drift this nation has taken away from either God or our founding principles.

And yes, you need to repent. I need to repent. We all need to repent. The failure to acknowledge that is in fact the proof of the desperate need.

I do not dispute science. I dispute the constant politicizing of “science”. Evolution is not science. Global warming is not science. To think so takes more faith than I could possibly muster.

  2. Edward Endo says:

    Lisa,

You couldn’t have said it better! We are under God’s Grace and mercy for the moment: the calm before the severe storm. It’s only a matter of time before the judgment comes upon us.

  3. Thanks Edward. Maybe God will still have mercy and will forestall the judgment we so richly deserve. But we are getting close to the point that He will only do so if we seriously cry out for it.
